Critical Connections

We all know that the woman is the akeres habayis, the home’s mainstay and its life source, to the point where Rabi Meir
called his wife his “home” rather than his “wife.” As it says in Mishlei, a woman builds her home with wisdom, with chochmos
ranging from the sublime to the mundane.
Further on in Mishlei, Shlomo Hamelech tells us, “A wise heart (lev navon) seeks knowledge” (15:14). Knowledge must be
pursued. What sort of wisdom is it that fills this heart and motivates it to pursue knowledge? Navon, the term used here,
relates to binah, the special wisdom of the woman. A woman endowed with a lev navon, a heart filled with binah, knows that
she must look for information in order to achieve real knowledge.
Women do this all the time.We are constantly talking and inquiring, asking and discussing; so much of our daily lives
are taken up by the search for practical knowledge that can aid us and our families.
What happens, then, when we’re plunged into a situation that is beyond the chochmos we have acquired so far? And what
happens when we cannot access the resources and the knowledge we need?
